In the Studio with Maryland Artist Catherine Rohsner

Today, we’re going In the Studio with Maryland artist Catherine Rohsner. Catherine’s artwork was recently on display in the Chesapeake Arts Center’s Our Maryland Gallery exhibit.

Maryland artist, Catherine Rohsner, is a watercolorist who concentrates on still lifes, landscapes and architectural scenes. Her watercolor paintings follow the impressionistic tradition of capturing light, and she does it beautifully through her technique and strong grasp of color. Because of her inherent  knowledge of the medium, her pieces have a sense of realism with a hint of whimsy and airiness. “Teatime Rose” really captures her ability as an artist, illustrating her technical talent as well as her attention to detail and composition. Catherine has been creating art since she was young but also is an urban fantasy author and copywriter.

Here’s Catherine talking about her art, process and experience...

What art do you most identify with?

I most identify with Impressionistic, Romantic, and realist art. I also like some children's cartoons because they look like something I might draw.

When did you realize you were an artist?

I probably realized it when I was pretty young, because I enjoyed drawing a lot, illustrated my books, and took art classes.

How did you get into your art/side-gig?

I had painted 7 paintings one summer a few years ago to build up a portfolio to start an online shop.

What are you currently working on?

I am currently on hold with painting, but I have a long list of photos and titles that would make great watercolors. I have an unfinished painting of a potted geranium.

What's your favorite piece of artwork that you have created and why?

One favorite is St. Catherine's of Siena because it was the first major watercolor I ever did, I remember the sunshine there, and I love the bricks. Another is a rose painting that commemorated my 24th birthday.

What food, drink, song inspires you?

The original Doctor Who theme song is inspirational; I also find the animated band Gorillaz to be so creative and I wish I could achieve something like it.

What memorable responses have you had to your work?

I appreciate that sometimes people thought my painting was a photo, or they got the same sense of a beautiful picture that I had when I saw it in real life, or they appreciated my style.

What work do you most enjoy creating?

Watercolors.

What’s your favorite quote?

"As music is the poetry of sound, so is painting the poetry of sight . . ." ~James McNeill Whistler

What role does the artist have in society?

Artists can have different roles, but I think mine might be to capture beautiful things I see. I want people to delight in beautiful things.

What’s your dream job?

My dream job is to be an author, a poet, and an artist.

Is there any local artist that Inspires you? If so, who and why?

Lee Boynton, because I learned how to see the light when painting.

Why art?

I wouldn't be me if I didn't produce art.
