In the Studio with Concert Photographer and Musician Domenic Cicala

Today, we’re going In the Studio with concert photographer and musician Domenic Cicala. He wears more than a few hats. One of his great loves is photography. He started as a collector and lover of the medium back in the analog days of film. That love of film still influences his work. He lives mostly in the photography world, shooting people.  His main areas of work these days are Music and  Beauty portraits, though you will find an occasional still life or landscape. He prefers to capture those moments in between, unstaged, no pretense, truth.

We’re thrilled to have Domenic’s photography currenting in the Rock n’ Roll Gallery exhibit that is on display until September 30, 2021 as well has him performing a FREE concert for the community on Thursday, September 30th in front of the Hammonds Lane Theatre from 6:00pm-7:30pm. Tickets are available, click here.

Here’s Domenic talking about his background, and passion for photography:

Which band is your favorite to photograph? Reckless Kelly

Which photographer(s) influence you as a photographer? Which photographer(s) inspire your work?

Lynn Goldsmith, Mark Seliger, Mona Kuhn, Robert Maxwell , Ellen Von Unwerth....all these and Baron Wolman and Bettina Rheims...

Is there a specific venue that you enjoy photographing at?  Use to really like the Sundry but it is closed now ...really anywhere where they have decent stage lighting...

Is there a message you hope your photographs convey? What would you like to say through your photographs? I’m not sure there is a message, more a vibe. I try to capture those moments in between. I am a big fan of the unguarded moments...whether real or staged :-)

When did you find your passion for photography? Later in Life a bit probably when I was around 30. I was encouraged to get a camera after being a collector for a brief time. I just loved the "real" aspect of photography as a medium

What motivates you to continue taking photographs? All of the above. Still love the person to person interaction, intimacy, trust and the end result that still bring me a WOW

How would you describe your photography style? Guerilla, as I stated, I look for and try to capture the unguarded moments... sometimes they are staged to capture but ...

How do you connect with the subject of a photograph? Always start off with a brief few minutes of conversation if we are meeting for the first time, mostly trying to establish trust and their confidence that I am going to capture them "in the best light"

What are some challenges faced with photography? What do you enjoy the most?

Well like many things theses days value and compensation. Many folks don't really have a great eye, and digital has given them access to so many "shots" they don't really appreciate what a great photographer can bring to the equation.

What advice would you give a photographer that just started their career?

Find a great mentor, learn what you can, work on developing "your" style and then shoot, shoot, shoot...nothing makes you better than practice...
