Monica Hawse is a local photographer, currently exhibiting in the “Maryland the Beautiful” exhibit here at CAC. Monica Hawse grew up as an Army brat and has lived in Maryland for most of her life. She loved using a camera even as a young girl, but only began to seriously study the art and technical components of photography in the past 5 years. It was after her government career as a Computer Scientist that she was able to dedicate her time and passion to learn and practice photography. She is a member of several local camera clubs, and has had her work displayed at The Arts Council of Anne Arundel County, Maryland Federation of Art, Bowie City Hall, and the Kent Island Federation of Art. Her husband and grown children are wonderfully supportive and encouraging. After being out and about in nature, and on the ground to “get that shot”, one of her greatest joys is to then share the wonder of nature or an experience that she has captured.

Here’s Monica talking about her art, process and experience:

When did you realize you were an artist: I realized I was becoming an artist when my photographs were accepted for exhibits, I won camera club awards and other honors, and some of my work actually sold!  These are the ultimate compliments to me, that people like my art enough to hang it in their homes.  Recognitions serve as proof that my photography is improving through the years.

Was there a pivotal moment you remember when you knew you were going to pursue art as a career: I didn’t pursue art as a career, although I’ve always loved taking pictures. Instead I had a wonderful technical career and when I retired I began to study the Art of Photography, which is very different than just taking pictures. I guess I could say Photography is now my second career.

How did you get into Photography: When I retired 6 years ago and my children were all grown up, I had time to immerse myself in Photography. That included learning the components of photographic art, about gear, and about post processing. My study was enhanced by joining different clubs, having amazing teachers and mentors; sharing knowledge with fellow club members;  taking classes; and practicing nearly every day.

On finding inspiration:  Nature inspires me the most. There is so much to discover when you carefully focus on what is around in this beautiful world of ours. I love to photograph animals, flowers, little creatures, nature scenes, and people.

What are you currently working on: Currently I’m working on using new (to me) photography products that are tools to enhance photographs to have a more artsy or painterly look.  It’s been fun to experiment with them, especially during these many pandemic months.

Advice for other photographers just starting out:  Do what you love! If you are passionate about something, the hours you put in to study and to practice your art, won’t feel like work.  It is joyful.  Of course there are times when you will think “my work is not very good” and you may get discouraged, but keep at it. You will definitely keep improving.
