In the Studio with photographer Karen Jury

Karen Jury is a local photographer, currently exhibiting in the “Maryland the Beautiful” exhibit here at CAC.  Karen splits her time between Ellicott City and Kent Island MD.  Her newest passion is using her photographs to create beautiful Photo Encaustics.  Covering her photos with layers of beeswax/resin and using different inks/pigments and carvings, creates a unique piece of art.  Karen was born in Pittsburgh, PA, where she received a BFA in Design at Carnegie-Mellon University.  She currently shows her work at The Artists Gallery in Ellicott City.  She has made Maryland her home for over 20 years.  She often she has works at Howard County of Arts, Kent Island Federation of Arts and Circle Gallery in Annapolis.

Here’s Karen talking about her art, process and experience:

When did you realize you were an artist: When I finally left Catholic School and started in our public school I met with a teacher who appreciated my talents and encouraged me to pursue those talents.

Was there a pivotal moment you remember when you knew you were going to pursue art as a career: When I was accepted into Carnegie-Mellon University, I realized I probably had some talent.

What projects are you working on right now? I am working on a series of fall images I created and turning them into encaustics.

Advice for other photographers just starting out: If you need your art to live…..create.

Anything else we should know about you? I was fortunate enough to receive my first camera for my 1st communion, in second grade.  I have always loved taking pictures and documenting events.  I have also been very lucky to have not only supportive parents, but a husband who supports my love of art and encourages me in what I love.
